Victor Agius is a Gozo born artist, clay and ceramics being his primary medium. His artistic practice consists of performance, installation, sculpture and painting. At its core, his work is concerned with formless matter. Agius examines the formless matter proper to his own experience of the environment –either randomly or carefully selected sites with their distinctive ecological and archeological features– which all find roots in the earth or soil-derived organic materials (raw clay, for instance, beside natural pigments, oils and acrylics). This has allowed him to produce a body of work through which to reflect upon the subject of human existence in general and the limits of his own existence in particular.
In 2020 the Gabriel Caruana Foundation welcomed Victor Agius, for a short residency at The Mill. This was an opportunity for Agius to self-isolate in a confined space to document and create new works in dialogue with the legacy, heritage and Gabriel Caruana’s contemporary practice. Agius was a frequent visitor to Caruana’s studios in Balzan and the exhibition space at The Mill.
This residency forms part of an ongoing experimental process which Agius is currently undertaking where he is investigating remote and unusual spaces rich in contextual and social narratives. Through the support of Heritage Malta, Agius carried out an overnight stay at Ġgantija Temples in Gozo in July 2020 to conduct artistic research and create insitu interventions. The work was inspired from the spirituality transmitted by the vacant heritage site at night. The artist also allowed himself to experiment with various media such as British stoneware clay and terrarossa, a material highly synonymous with his contemporary artistic practice.
