Launch Event: Friday, 13th October at 19:00
Event Location: The Mill – Art, Culture and Crafts Centre, Birkirkara, Malta
Event Description:
Between July and October, 2023, a group of parents and children met regularly at The Mill together with Raffaella Zammit, as part of her M.A. in Social Practice Arts and Critical Education dissertation project. Together they walked, reflected and created. Walking with clay, they explored what made them feel safe or not in public space, looked for playful spaces and re/discoved spaces through their senses, observing the texture on a tree while the summer sun set. Fun, boredom, heat, time, power fueled their refelctions and imaginations.
Zammit is interested in how we experience public space, and how art-based methods can contribute towards the growing discourse of mobilities research. She questions whether we connect with urban space as a means to move from one place to the next, or does it hold deeper connections? Why is relational infrastructure important as much as physical pedestrian infrastructure? Underpinning this research are Henri Lefebvre’s theories on the production of space and the right to the city and Mimi Sheller’s writings on mobility justice.
We invite you to join us at The Mill, Birkirkara on the 2nd of December for a pop-up exhibit documenting the process engaged with during the Walking Uncharted Territory project.
Walking Uncharted Territory is a research project by Raffaella Zammit in partial fulfillment of the requirements of her Masters of Arts in Social Practice Arts and Critical Education, Department of Arts, Open Communities and Adult Education, Faculty of Education, University of Malta, and supervised by Prof. Raphael Vella.
