Bio
I’m Ed, an illustrator & designer. I grew up in Malta but moved to the UK 6 years ago. After a few years of working as a designer with a couple of design studios, most notably Nice and Serious, an ethically-driven creative agency, I left my job to focus on developing myself as an illustrator and spend more time in nature. My life has been quite nomadic since then, interspersing my time between working remotely from the countryside, volunteering on eco-projects and doing a bit of travelling in between. Since the recent pandemic I’ve unexpectedly found myself based in Gozo, where I think I’ll find it quite hard to leave. Living abroad has given me a new perspective on my home-country, almost viewing its charms & oddities as an insider-outsider, and it continues to inspire my work on a regular basis.

Rationale:
Gabriel Caruana continues to be a pioneer of modern & contemporary art and was a big influence on me during my early years as an art student at the Mosta Institute of Art & Design. The Mill itself is a unique landmark that radiates with creative energy and quirkiness, a breath of fresh air that stands out amongst its traffic-filled surroundings. To create this artwork, I spent some time revisiting Gabriel's works and then followed it up with a mark-making session on my sketchbook, trying to be as free as possible and not have a final result in mind. I then collated a few of the marks and ideas into one composition, using a central, grounding, solid rectangle in the background to represent the timeless presence of the Mill itself, a solid landmark with countless ideas, experiments and endless energy radiating out from it, as has been done for many years before and hopefully for many years more.
