Bio:

Born in Canada in 1980, Joyce lived most of her childhood and adult life in her parents’ country of origin, Malta, Camilleri completed her first degree in art teaching at the University of Malta in 2002. Feeling the need to further her studies in the field of art, she immediately started attending an artistic printmaking diploma course at the Malta School of Art under the tuition of Mr Anton Grech. Meanwhile she also pursued further training at the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg, through masterclass two workshops with German artist Michael Morgner. In 2017, Camilleri completed the M. ED Artist Teacher course at the University of West of Scotland and most recently attended her third workshop at the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg under the mentorship of Austrian artist Tobias Pils. Camilleri's work attempts to explore drawing and printmaking as distinct, nonetheless symbiotic art practices that both retain essentially graphical elements that echo her regular life drawing practice alongside thorough studio research.

Rationale:

The Mill is a space where old and new meet in a creative process that brings together natural elements and their transformation via human intervention. The 18th century mill served as a site to grind wheat into flour, which in turn was changed into bread; the food of many, rich and poor. Two centuries later, the mill became a centre of art making, where another natural element, namely clay, was manipulated and moulded into art; the food of souls, old and young. Like the mill, this monotype results from deeply rooted traditions that echo timeless processes of transformation, which celebrate creativity, whilst allowing our minds to wander back and forth in time.
